sPEAKING IS ESSENTIAL!
In his interview, Kabir Mohideen provided a very interesting perspective on language learning. Growing up in a bilingual environment, he is fluent in both English and Hindi, he also started learning Spanish at a very young age but has little proficiency in it. In his opinion, this happened because of the different methods he used to learn these languages. He learned how to speak English and Hindi before he could read it or write it, as opposed to learning how to read, write and speak Spanish all at the same time. This factor, in his opinion, is of great importance when one goes through the process of learning a second language. Scholar Gary Smith discusses in “Learning to Speak and Speaking to Learn” that through his experience, students that courses for first-year students that focus much of the learning in speaking assignments are able to develop coherent speech significantly but are also able to better learn course content.
